Just Finish…

They say if you want to get things done, tell someone, than you’ll feel more accountable and will actually work towards getting it done! Tell your mom. Tell your dad. Tell your spouse. Tell a friend. Tell your neighbour. Tell a sibling. Tell the local barista at the coffee shop. The important thing is finishing what you started. It’s not easy. So many distractions. Too many things out there to do. You want to do everything all at once than you don’t know where to start. You feel overwhelmed. You feel like your head is spinning. You tell yourself “I’m not lazy, or am I? “. You tell yourself ” I am not a procrastinator, or am I? “. Than so many thoughts rush through your head. Than you remember, it’s not that, it’s you that thinks you can do everything all at once. Guess what, we are not a Marvel Super Hero with magical super powers although that would be nice. We are not wired to telepathically think a thought and boom it happens. We can’t read a whole book in mere seconds. Or clean a house with a push of a button like the Jetsons. We don’t just write a whole 500 page book in minutes. Perhaps one day things might be different. In the mean time, I will share what works well for me. Keep in mind that what works for me might work for you or not. That’s ok. The important thing here is to give you a little idea that you can work with. My actual quite time to do the things that I really enjoy is late at night when all three small kids are actually sleeping. If your household is as busy as mine is, you will definitely be looking forward to those small times just for yourself. Times that you can catch up with your reading. You can finally sit down and do some writing. You might see the ideas just popping up and you’ll be grateful. You can finally take out your sketch book concentrate on what you have in front of you and just let the Picasso in you soar… What helps to maintain inspiration and the determination to do what you love doing is to turn off any distractions -that means no cell phone, no Social Media, no television etc. I know there’s many more but you get my point. Writing what you want, your theme, also helps keeping focused. It’s not going to be easy to finish doing things that we don’t like to do. It’s best to choose something that your passionate about and go for it! Setting a time limit to do it and sticking to it. If you do the same thing for a long periods of time without a break it will get to you, but if you work on it for twenty minutes or so and then take a break, you might get more ideas when you get back to it. Remember Baby steps… Concentrate on breaking your task into smaller parts. As you break it down it will allow you to actually be closer to your goal, which is finishing what you started. Do you want to finish a book? Start by reading a chapter per day. Do you want to write a book? Start by writing a 5-10 pages a day. Do you want to start a Blog? Start by writing an article a day of various topics. Before you know it you will have a lot of materials for a vast market. Do you want to lose weight? Start by exercising 30 minutes per day while eating healthier. Do you want to learn a foreign language? Get a CD and play it in your car while you commute. Breaking down a task will allow you to finish and before you know it, your improving yourself. Good Luck and don’t give up!
